Three dimension (3D) modeling is the process of developing a mathematical, wireframe representation of any three-dimensional object via specialized software. The product is called a 3D model. It can be displayed as a two-dimensional image through a process called 3D rendering or used in a computer simulation of physical phenomena. The modeling process of preparing geometric data for 3D computer graphics is similar to plastic arts such as sculpting.
Today, 3D models are used in a wide variety of fields. It has become an indispensable tool in the medical industry, the movie industry, the video game industry, architecture, engineering and industrial design. 3D modeling is used primarily for its photo realistic rendering capabilities in cinema and video games but serves concrete purposes in the medical and design fields. 3D models allow designers to evaluate the form and functionality of complex parts before having to create them in the real world which results in huge cost savings. Solid models can be sectioned to reveal their internal features, and they can be stress tested as if they were physical entities in the real world.
3D modeling will play a large role in the Metacycle project by helping designers visualize possible solutions and allowing them to design components that can be rapid prototyped. Furthermore, 3D models are highly accurate and extremely efficient in terms presenting information about a certain design and can be used to help many people understand and benefit from the solutions that are proposed.
